Leaderboard & competition mode
A ranking system lets players measure themselves against one another and track their progress. This competitive mode reinforces engagement and creates community dynamics around the game.
Solo & training mode
A solo mode lets users practise against the app with different difficulty levels. It offers an ideal environment to progress at one's own pace before challenging friends in multiplayer.
Conception
Reinventing a millennia-old game for mobile starts by understanding what makes people come back to it. The design phase laid down two pillars: an adaptive game engine able to follow the player's progression, and a competitive system with real-time ranking to stimulate loyalty.
The user flows were designed to minimise the time between opening the app and starting a game.
Design
Deep burgundy, leather textures, gold serif typography — the visual identity asserts a premium heritage while remaining perfectly legible on small screens. The design system was extended to three distinct game modes (solo, multiplayer, competition) with a strong consistency that reinforces a sense of belonging to a community of serious players.
Development
Zetos developed the game engine, the matchmaking system and the dynamic leaderboard on an architecture able to absorb simultaneous sessions in real time.
Technical stability was as much a priority as the experience itself — one bug in a competitive match means one lost user.
Technologies used
The Doubles mobile app runs on a robust architecture using Kotlin, Swift and React on the frontend, paired with a Java + MySQL backend, all optimised with Redis and hosted on AWS.
